The Lost Greek Drawings

July 7, 2025 - Posted In: Drawing

When I have studied an artist I see a portfolio of paintings or sculptures. I commit them to memory. Perhaps I’m lucky enough to see them in the real world in a collection. I might make the journey just to see them as I did recently visiting Valaeries  in France to see ceramics by Pablo Picasso.
Picasso was a prolific Artist , many artists have a much slimmer catalogue.

In my youth I believed I had an infinite amount of time to make art. The next piece will be better, after 40 plus years of making I know that only a few pieces astound me and hold value for me. Many have sold for small amounts. Series have been broken up and sold separately. Or I didn’t see their worth and destroyed them. Lost them or I gave them away.
These drawings were made in a hut, on a mountain , on an island in the Aegean in 1994/5. Such a formative period of my life they narrate my experience of surviving a mental health crisis , getting well through immersion in nature in the company of animals and the ‘agrotes’ farming village community.

They were drawn from my surroundings but also imbued with powerful symbolism from my unconscious. Each has a real story and a metaphorical story. They were dreamt , felt and lived on the mountain I saw as my mother with my lover, an unlikely protective guardian Kosta.

I thought I had lost these drawings and mourned them . Recently I found them. Stored carefully in a portfolio. If I’m going to be remembered for anything then remember these.
