JUST LOOKING

The Gift of Presence

Just Looking is an encounter between two people.

We sit together within a carefully held space, informed by the therapeutic principles of unconditional positive regard and clear boundaries of time and place.

There are no words and no physical touch.

We sit close enough to hold a soft gaze. Eye contact can be broken and found again. Nothing is demanded. There is no need to perform, disclose, explain or understand.

There is simply permission to be present to one another.

As the artist, I make my mind, body and heart open to receive the presence of the person sitting opposite me. I do not search for an image. I wait.

I trust that what needs to enter the space will come willingly.

Within this benign acceptance, images begin to arise — sensations, fragments and forms that seem to roll into the space between us. They may be bodily, symbolic, emotional, strange or inexplicable.

I do not regard these images as diagnoses or truths about the other person. They belong to the encounter itself: something that emerges within the particular space created when two people consent to simply be present together.

The drawing becomes another kind of witness.

Afterwards, we look at what has appeared.

We don’t have to know what it means.

We witness.
We wonder.

Just Looking does not promise revelation. It offers something quieter: the possibility of being received without demand.

For a bounded moment, another person offers their attention, and we offer ours.

The gift is presence.
